Defense reduces the damage you receive, immenseily helping with surviviability. Luck (and pictos) can get your critical chance up to 100+%, meaning you will always have critical hits = 50% more damage. But since so many pictos can give you 30+% extra critical chance you do not need to max out Luck. Never bothered with might.

Critical Strike Damage: If a hit deals a Critical Hit, its damage is multiplied by your Critical Damage Multiplier. By default your Critical Damage Multiplier is +100%, or equivalent to 200% of your base damage, causing your hits to deal double damage. Regular hits are scaled by Added Damage, Increased Damage and More Damage.

90% reduced extra damage taken from crits useful?
Reduced damage from crits is a very powerful defensive mechanic as it greatly decreases the amount of spike damage you take, which is the most likely thing to kill you in a lot of situations. Reduced crit damage taken is incredibly valuable in hardcore, but questionably so in softcore.

Critical strikes cause hits to deal "extra damage" compared to a non-critical strike, the magnitude of which is determined by critical strike multiplier (i.e. crit multi). Player characters have a base crit multi value of 150%, while monsters have a base crit multi value of 130%, or 50% and 30% "extra damage" respectively. [2]

About crit Avoidance and less bonus damage taken from crits
To me, crit avoidance should be converted into less bonus damage taken from crits. Here is my reasoning: Crit avoidance is an all or nothing effect, crits in this game are huge (2x damage), and going with 90% avoidance will not guarantee you will not get one-shotted, even if you skip crit nodes in monos.

Reduced Extra damage from critical strikes - Path of Exile
To negate critical strike damage I am using the watcher's eye mod of ' you take 60% reduced extra damage from critical strikes while affected by determination' and 'You take 30% reduced extra damage from critical strikes" from the new Armour Mastery .

Brass dome is a solution if you are afraid of crits. Also check out the soul of solaria pantheon upgrade. It prevents you from taking critmulti damage for 4 seconds after getting crit. At 17th level, you can roll three additional weapon damage dice when determining the extra damage for a critical hit with a melee attack. I want to read this that when they crit while wielding a Greatsword that they would roll 3 extra sets of the damage dice, or 6d6. I get the feeling that it would only be 3d6. Which is it?
