The psychology of volition - PMC

Participants experienced greater control over action effects when the action had been compatibly versus incompatibly primed (Chambon and Haggard 2012), even though they were unaware of these subliminal primes. I have already mentioned that subliminal action primes can influence behaviour in a free choice task (Kiesel et al. 2006).

Cognitive Neurostimulation: Learning to Volitionally Sustain Ventral ...

Specifically, fMRI analyses aimed to test the following hypotheses: (1) instruction to engender motivation volitionally without reward cues would not reliably activate the VTA prior to training, (2) neurofeedback training would help participants learn to induce activation consistently, as evidenced by Post-test activation, (3) volitional VTA activation without reward cues (i.e., cognitive ...

Volitional control of individual neurons in the human brain

To do this, we developed a visual neurofeedback task in which participants were trained to move a block on a screen by modulating the activity of an arbitrarily selected neuron from their brain. Remarkably, participants were able to volitionally modulate the firing rate of the direct neuron in these previously uninvestigated structures.

The participants should learn how to volitionally move the object up or down by controlling their SCP in the required polarity. All successful changes (i.e., declinations from baseline in the required polarity with duration of 2 consecutive sec in the last 4sec of each trial) were rewarded with the symbol of a sun after each trial and motivational feedback from trainers.

Results: We found marked delays and increased variability when participants volitionally delayed their responses, averaging 322 ms for standard and 861 ms for delayed simple RTs (267% increase), and 650 ms for standard and 1018 ms for delayed choice RTs (157% increase). Effects did not differ across age, sex, or handedness. However ...

The relations between our volitionally induced dissolution and reconstitution of the experience of the self on one side, and pathological phenomena on the other side, are currently unclear, but it is intriguing that subjects with depersonalization disorders, who typically experience an altered familiarity of the self and the environment, showed decreased metabolic activity in right middle and ...

Volitional control of reflex cough - PMC - PubMed Central (PMC)

All participants coughed in response to 200 μM capsaicin and were able to modify the cough. Variables exhibiting changes include those related to the peak airflow during the expiratory phase. Results demonstrate that it is possible to volitionally modify cough motor output characteristics.

In addition, paternalistic protectionism for this vulnerable population may have resulted in the paradoxical effect of not only limiting progress in palliative care, but also intruding upon the rights of these patients to participate volitionally in either therapeutic or basic research.
