Vietnam, a net coal importer, currently mostly relies on coal for electricity generation. The ambitious Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8), approved in May 2023, plans to increase the share of renewables (wind, solar, and hydro) to 46.5% by 2030 and reach Net Zero by 2050. Offshore wind targets for 2030 are comparatively modest at 6 GW and 4% of the energy mix, to be increased by 16% in 2050.
