Think about how they would affect the environment around them - shadow's, reflections ect and think about how the light sources would affect the objects. It simplifies lines and shapes and its very useful for making stencils. In this video you can see how it simplifies these ships into a bunch of abstract angular shapes: starts at 2m22s.
