Think about their relationship to the 'camera' - the depth of field. Think about how they would affect the environment around them - shadow's, reflections ect and think about how the light sources would affect the objects. You can also hide a lot of sins with a subtle film grain overlay as a top layer.

It simplifies lines and shapes and its very useful for making stencils. In this video you can see how it simplifies these ships into a bunch of abstract angular shapes: starts at 2m22s.
