You include the itemgetter function only once, so to be fair, you should do item1 = lambda x: x[1] also only once, before calling timeit.Secondly, isn't c sorted after the first call? I don't think timeit creates a copy... Also, at least if you do it only once, the main difference might be that of the cost to sort the first c compared to that needed for he second, random.shuffle(c).
